The Safeguarding Commission is an entity founded in February 2015 by the Archdiocese of Malta, the Diocese of Gozo and the Conference of Religious Major Superiors. Through increased awareness and positive action the Commission aims to bring about a new culture where children and vulnerable adults are at the centre of the Church’s pastoral work. It promotes prevention of all types of abuse through increased awareness and positive action.
The Safeguarding Commission provides support in the following four areas:
- Creating and maintaining a safe environment
- Training and policy development
- Responding to safeguarding allegations and concerns
- Provide care and support to victims and survivors.
The Safeguarding Commission works closely with civil authorities, in particular the Malta Police Force, to ensure that the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults is sought at all times.
As from 2017, the Safeguarding Commission started offering its services to organisations outside the Church which work with children and vulnerable adults in order to be a Safeguarding Champion in Malta and Gozo. Please contact us for more information.
Since March 2022, the work of the Safeguarding Commission is solely focused on the Archdiocese of Malta and all the religious communities in Malta. A Gozo faithful who would like to file a complaint concerning the Diocese of Gozo can do so by contacting their Safeguarding Office on the following:
